What makes a good lesson plan?
A well-structured lesson plan has five sections. Learning objectives state what students will be able to do by the end of the lesson — use action verbs like calculate, describe, label, or compare so the goal is measurable and easy to assess. Activities lay out the lesson flow with rough timings: a warm-up or recap, direct instruction or a demonstration, guided or pair practice, and a closing review or exit task. Resources list everything you and students will need — textbook pages, worksheet names, equipment, and URLs. Assessment describes how you will check that students have met the objectives: an exit ticket, cold-call questions, peer marking, or observation. Homework records the task, page range and due date; it is kept separate from the rest of the plan so it can be excluded from the cover pack a substitute receives.
Filling in all five sections does three things at once: it helps you pace the lesson before you walk in, it gives a substitute teacher everything they need to run the class without extra explanation, and it creates a record you can return to at the end of term to see what worked and what to change next year.
